On Thursday — the official start of winter — the first skiing spot opened for the season in Connecticut.
Ski Sundown, located in New Hartford, is now open daily, including holidays. And thanks to the crew of snowmakers, the slopes are covered with the powdery white stuff.
For the first day, Ski Sundown opened up eight trails for skiing and snowboarding:
- Easiest: Tom's Treat, Little Joe and Sensation
- More Difficult: Canyon Run, Nor'Easter and Exhibition
- Most Difficult: Temptor and Stinger, including terrain features on Stinger
And more trails will be open for the weekend.
"Whether you are an advanced, intermediate or beginner skier or boarder, we have terrain to suit your needs and ability level," Ski Sundown says. "100 percent snowmaking on every trail, excellent grooming and reliable conditions. We offer day and night skiing in a beautiful mountain setting close to home."
Here are the operating hours:
- 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.: Weekends & Holidays
- 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.: Weekdays
- Dec. 24: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Dec. 25: 6 to 10 p.m.
- Dec. 31: 8 a.m. to midnight
Ski Sundown says it strive to offer the best mountain experience and keeps the mountain well maintained, fresh, and exciting. The freestyle terrain may contain jumps, hits, ramps, banks, fun boxes, jibs, rails, half pipes, quarter pipes, mogul terrain, and other created or natural terrain features.
Options at Ski Sundown include alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross country and other specialized ski equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers.
